Geometry is a very smooth subject. Lines are straight, circles are perfectly round, and planes are completely flat. This type of math works perfectly in the human world, but fails to describe nature. You cannot measure the surface area of a tree; the bark is too rough. The distance around a coastline cannot be measured either. It is too jagged and regular geometry cannot describe this type of pattern. The word geometry means, “earth measure” in Latin. However geometry is far from measuring the earth or anything naturally on the earth. We needed a new form of math to measure our earth.

Nature has been with us since the beginning of time, but not until recently have we been able to associate math with it. Fractal geometry is a recent discovery that we can describe nature with.
